Covent Garden Flower Market

Afternoon, one and all. The weather here today in England is particularly drab and dreary, dark, miserable, foggy, cold, murky . . . . I think you get the picture. Due to this inclement weather, I thought I would take the opportunity to drop you a line and share as promised some photos from  Covent Garden Flower Market and event prep, that a select few students from Writtle College, got the chance to get stuck into.

It all started with a Health & Safety briefing from our course tutor. There is a standard joke that goes around the floristry department and the girls under the lady in question - for she worries herself half to death about our safety  whether we are on the college premises or away. . . . and because of this, the high visibility jackets were issued . . . As a rule, the majority of florists are not known by the public as trendily dressed individuals - this assumption is caused by the bulky fleeces, multiple layers, body warmers, and hats that we are often seen sporting. The high vis jackets, completely cemented this assumption.

Here we are, eagerly following the very talented David Ragg & David Denyer ( 4 times RHS Chelsea Gold Medal Winners) around the market, watching them carefully select flowers for their demonstration pieces from the abundant selection at Covent Garden.

Read a blog from David Denyer by following the link below

The lovely Victoria Richards working on a striking design, striking notes of Ikebana, the Japanese floral art form.

The hugely talented Mr Joe Massie engaged in talks with a floristry student about his designs for the demonstration.

I throughly enjoyed working with the designers, and I certainly picked up some new techniques the designers were displaying in their work. It also proved to be a great excerise for fusing the different floristry groups together, with many of the first year students picking BA Hon levels students brains about college work.

All in all, a very insightful day. A huge thank you to Covent Garden Market for presenting Writtle College with the oppertunity to come and gain some first class, hands on experience and to the designers for putting up with 20+ students asking questions at every oppertunity!
